U:’s now-traditional year-end concert of new music is happening again this year. Hear some of U:’s best pieces from the year coming to a close, get a glimpse of U:’s plans for the new year, chat, eat carrots and drink beet juice. As always. Programme to be announced during November!
Ensemble U: was founded in 2002 by Taavi Kerikmäe and Tarmo Johannes. Its six outstanding musicians are Helena Tuuling — clarinet, Merje Roomere — violin, Levi-Danel Mägila — cello, Taavi Kerikmäe — piano, Tarmo Johannes — flute, and Vambola Krigul — percussion. U: is currently Estonia’s most active and best-known new music ensemble. It is characterised by a sensitive sound, openness to bold experimental ideas, and the performance of even the most demanding works without a conductor.
U: has performed in Estonia and at major international festivals abroad, and is, among other things, still the only Estonian ensemble to have performed at the Venice Music Biennale. U: performs both works from the canon of new music and experimental compositions. One of the ensemble’s important areas of focus is exploring improvisation and performing works that require the interpretation of unconventional notation.
Design: Tuuli Aule
The concert is supported by Kultuurkapital and the Ministry of Culture and is held in collaboration with the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Music.
