I Didn’t Even Notice When You Left – 27.12

“I Didn’t Even Notice When You Left” is a play about the moment when the ties that held everything together break, and what comes next is as obscure as an extinguished star. On stage are people whose conversations flow between everyday longings and crazy theories, unwashed windows and adultery, funerals and communists, economic growth and Titanic. It is a play that more refined gentlemen might describe with phrases such as “a wild medley,” “sick rampaging” or “a melancholy reflection.” The production draws on Cristi Puiu’s film “Sieranevada,” Bora Ćosić’s novel “My Family’s Contribution to the World Revolution,” and elsewhere, too.

In Lauri Lagle’s production, the performers are Marika Vaarik, Eva Koldits, Rea Lest, Simeoni Sundja, Sander Roosimägi, Alex Paul Pukk, Joonas Koff, Uku Pokk and Joosep Lõhmus. Lauri Lagle’s productions have moved along the boundary between the poetic and the everyday. The actors’ performances have emerged from months of rehearsal, focusing less on the question of “character” and more on directing energy, opening up meaning, mutual perception and creating a sense of ensemble. Lagle’s productions are not afraid of lyrical tones, but always keep their footing on the invigorating, reassuring ground of everyday life.

With Ekspeditsioon’s largest cast to date, this production brings numerous grotesque, bizarre, absurd and abstract scenes to the stage, revealing the kaleidoscopic nature of a moment of hysteria. In contrast to Chekhovian lethargy, the characters in this production are filled with intense desires, loud demands, endless discontent and an urge to get something at all costs. But what, they no longer know.
