Mingo Rajandi and Eva Koldits’s “Elajannad²: Pomegranate Tree, Give Me Weapons” delves into intimate partner violence with heart and body. With words and sound. No wound or scar is left untouched; the bandages of silence and blankets of darkness are torn away, the crust of shame crumbles and falls like sand… beneath our feet. The spell is broken.

“And where do you live, then? I live in the House of Truth. The House of Truth is not like the Writers’ House or the Teachers’ House or the Miners’ Town. The House of Truth is different. The House of Truth has no walls, only ramparts, and those ramparts are built of silence. No one has yet gone to the House of Truth to seek the truth, to pursue it. Though perhaps some still dream of truth… Some may know it, remember its taste, and smack their lips. But here silence surrounds you like water: if you open your mouth, it goes down your throat…”

The texts for the production were written by some of the most significant and distinctive women writers in contemporary Estonian literature: Maarja Kangro, Lilli Luuk, Brigitta Davidjants, Kaisa Ling and Triin Soomets. Each brings her own personal voice, experience, style and perspective to the production.

Mirtel Pohla and Eva Koldits, with Mingo Rajandi (double bass), Kadri Tegelmann (vocals), Tobias Tammearu (saxophone), Andre Maaker (guitars), Andres Kaljuste (viola) and Martin Petermann (drums).

Elajannad is a creative duo formed by Mingo Rajandi and Eva Koldits. They explore ways of bringing music and theatre together in new forms, with the two as equal and organic partners. Elajannad’s first production, “A Passion for a Woman,” in 2023 explored a woman’s journey through the stages of her life. It addressed the impossible choices, taboos and silenced topics imposed on women by society, passed down from mothers to daughters across generations and shaping how our society works.

In 2024, Mingo Rajandi was nominated at the Estonian Theatre Awards for the music of “Elajannad,” in the category for musical design and original music in a spoken-word production.
