The “Star Wars” film series is a global cultural phenomenon that has earned enormous sums at the box office, inspired the creation of countless products, and provided rich material for all kinds of political and social comparisons. But what do the “Star Wars” films themselves say about world politics, and especially about United States foreign policy?

About the lecture: The lecture explores “Star Wars” and other pop culture phenomena as part of a broader public discussion about what actions are right and justified. From this perspective, pop culture is not merely entertainment that offers a break from serious social issues; it actively contributes to how they are understood. Because “Star Wars” originated in the United States, the film series directly engages with one of America’s central founding myths: manifest destiny. According to this idea, the United States is a uniquely chosen country with a global mission that must be carried out at almost any cost. “Star Wars” offers a counterpoint: an alternative myth centred on balance and a deep scepticism toward all kinds of “chosen ones.”

About the speaker: Patrick Thaddeus Jackson is a professor of international studies at the School of International Service at American University in Washington. His research focuses on international relations theory, the philosophy of social science, and the role of culture and ideas in world politics. In his publications, he examines how political identities, historical narratives, and philosophical starting points shape our understanding of international relations. Drawing on his interdisciplinary approach, Professor Jackson will discuss how pop culture can challenge dominant political narratives and offer alternative perspectives on US foreign policy.

The discussion following the lecture will be moderated by Toni Čerkez, a lecturer in international relations at the Institute of Social Sciences at Tallinn University.
