We owe the fame of polychoral music above all to the composers active in Venice in the late 16th century, especially at St Mark’s Basilica. However, extensive experiments with polychoral music seem to have begun in 16th-century Munich and reached Venice through the friendship of Orlando di Lasso and Adriano Willaert, who were respectively Kapellmeister at the Munich and Venetian courts. Our programme features works by these two great figures of Renaissance music, as well as music from the heyday of polychoral composition that flourished in 17th-century Venice. Composers represented include Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, Giovanni Rovetta, Giovanni Legrenzi and Johann Rosenmüller.
