IX Tallinn feat. Reval – Soundscapes from Mystery to Elegance

Diminutions from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book

Hille Perl – viola da gamba (Germany)
Maria Morozova-Meléndez – spinet (Switzerland)
Josué Meléndez – cornett, recorder (Switzerland)

The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book can be considered a collection of some of the most beautiful instrumental diminutions ever written. As these works were composed for keyboard instruments, few players of other instruments dare to venture into this vast “forest” of diminutions. Some are so complex that they may at first seem almost unfathomable; yet their fluidity and brilliance make it possible to bring them to life with great elegance.

The programme consists mainly of works by British composers Peter Phillips, William Byrd, John Bull, Thomas Tallis, John Dowland and Giles Farnaby, but also includes works by Luca Marenzio, Jacob van Eyck and Toinot Arbeau. It features dances and works whose themes include the forest, hunting, bells, mourning and hymns.
