Reclining Concert: Electroacoustic Night of Souls

The Night of Souls festival returns for the ninth time. The latest electroacoustic music by composers from Estonia and elsewhere will resound beneath the vaults of Tartu St. John’s Church. The composers include both acclaimed figures in their genres and students and alumni of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre’s electroacoustic composition programme. Most of the works will receive their world premiere and have been composed for the Night of Souls festival and the acoustics of Tartu St. John’s Church.

Electroacoustic music brings together spatial sound, electronics, prerecorded audio and a specific time and place. Tartu St. John’s Church is a unique part of the works and the listening environment. You are invited to enjoy the concert as you wish: in a deck chair brought into the church for the evening, on a traditional church pew, on a personal sleeping mat on a pew or on the floor, or while taking a meditative stroll beneath the sanctuary’s vaults. The soundscape created by 21 speakers placed throughout the space will be unique in every part of the church. Tartu St. John’s Church tower will also be open for a late-evening visit.

The Night of Souls festival takes place at Tartu St. John’s Church every autumn, at the darkest time of the year, around All Souls’ Day. The bright summer has receded, making way for mellow autumn evenings, while the light of winter snow has yet to arrive. This is a time to look within, leave haste and noise behind, and experience music and your inner light.
