Geniuses and geometry, affairs and gardening, literature and chaos theory. Two eras intertwine in a picturesque English country house: the early 19th century and the present day. In one, a young woman of extraordinary intelligence asks her tutor questions the world is not yet ready to answer; in the other, modern scholars seek to erase blank spots from the map of literary history as they search for and decipher the treasures of the past. Somehow, steam engines and computers, dahlias and a dance party, Lord Byron and rice pudding, a monkey bite and, of course, love and algebra are all part of it.

Tom Stoppard’s sharply witty and moving play balances science and poetry, reason and passion, history and the present, bringing us a story about the longing to understand the world—and the people within it.
