Far away in the middle of Ireland, somewhere near Mullingari, live Rosemary and Anthony—two withdrawn loners approaching middle age. Their homes, old cattle farms, stand so close together that you can hear a kettle whistle in one kitchen from the shed of the other. And yet those farms, the cattle pens and the feud between their families have kept the two neighbours apart since childhood. At first glance, it might seem that Rosemary thinks little of Anthony, though in truth she has spent years waiting for the shy man to emerge from his strange stupor and notice more than the small pasture around his home. When Anthony’s elderly father one day hints that he plans to leave the family farm to a distant relative instead of his oddball son, Rosemary takes action. Anthony, too, gradually discovers that the key to his happiness may be in the hands of the determined and stubborn Rosemary.
