“Rocco and His Brothers” is a powerful, sweeping story for those who seek passion, complicated relationships, tense situations, love, hatred, forgiveness and… boxing in the theatre.
After her husband’s death, the widowed Rosaria decides to start a new life in northern Italy with her five sons. Simple and sincere, inexperienced in life, these country boys have grown up under their mother’s domineering and fiercely loving hand. They find themselves in industrial Milan after the Second World War: a tempting metropolis that never sleeps. In dark dives, money earned through a hard day’s work disappears in an instant to the sound of devilish jazz. Crime and prostitution flourish on the streets, alongside a thirst for life and a longing for happiness. Boxing is the most popular sport, promising a quick rise to success and money.
Yet people do not control their own destinies; instead, they let themselves be led by the blinding force of love. The boys, raised in a devoutly Catholic and austere family, are forced to choose between new and old values, putting their hidden sides, their honour and their love for their mother to the test. There are two ways out of an irresolvable situation: give up and let yourself be swallowed by utter darkness, or emerge from it as a saint. But saints are not made without sacrifices.
The production is based on the 1960 film “Rocco e i suoi fratelli” by Italian director Luchino Visconti, which won numerous awards.
