The recurring theme of “Tivoli” is nostalgia—a feeling that is both deeply personal and universally understood. Nostalgic longing is shaped by each person’s lived experience, but is equally a collective social construct. It is a double-edged sword. Nostalgia can heal the soul, but it can also poison it. In measured doses, it can offer answers about ourselves; overindulging in it can cut us off from the world. However pleasant it may be to wrap ourselves in nostalgia, it is no substitute for reality. In Siim Tõniste’s new production, the audience finds itself in a changing world. Both the performers and the audience contribute to its transformation.

Siim Tõniste works in many roles, including performer, choreographer, director, dramaturg, producer, curator and teacher. His artistic practice is based on collaboration, and he has created numerous works with other Estonian artists. Alongside his own work, he is interested in producing and curating, as well as in creative practices that shape how art is experienced and understood.
