In cooperation with the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, the Estonian Centre of Architecture has put together a special tour introducing Estonian architecture as seen through many a camera lens. Together, we’ll explore where and how architecture and film come together, which fascinating places have inspired film directors from Estonia and elsewhere at different times, and what locations Estonian architecture could offer future filmmakers.
Our journey begins in the Rotermann Quarter, which has undergone a dizzying transformation since the filming of Tarkovsky’s “Stalker”. Its futuristic, isolated and somewhat apocalyptic “Zone” has become one of Tallinn’s most modern districts, where heritage has been skilfully combined with new architecture. We’ll then head to Kultuurikatel, whose chimney still bears the UN sign painted for “Stalker”, and where the entrance to the “Stalker Zone” was located. The former power station is now one of the region’s most distinctive and modern event centres.
The tour ends at Tallinn Linnahall, where Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller “Tenet” was filmed, as well as, for example, “The Last Sentinel” by Estonian director Tanel Toom. The future and fate of Linnahall, a legendary landmark, remain uncertain. Some would like to demolish it, but the vast majority of people who have learned about its heritage recognise the site’s uniqueness and value, and believe it should be preserved for future generations.
The tour is on foot and lasts 120 minutes (2 hours); the route is approximately 3 km. Tours are offered in Estonian, Russian and English.
Tours organised by the Estonian Centre of Architecture are led by Estonia’s top professional guides, united by an interest in architecture and its history. The Centre also arranges private tours in six languages at fascinating locations across Estonia. To enquire, please email info@archtours.ee.
