In cooperation with the Black Nights Film Festival, the Estonian Centre of Architecture has put together a special tour introducing Estonian architecture as seen through many a camera lens. Together, we’ll explore where and how architecture and film come together, which fascinating places have inspired film directors from Estonia and elsewhere over the years, and which locations Estonian architecture could offer future filmmakers.
Our journey begins in the Rotermann Quarter, which has undergone a dizzying transformation since the filming of Tarkovsky’s “Stalker.” Its fantastical, isolated and somewhat apocalyptic “Zone” has become one of Tallinn’s most modern districts, where historic heritage has been skilfully combined with new architecture. We’ll continue to Kultuurikatel, whose chimney still bears the UN symbol painted for “Stalker” and where the entrance to the “Stalker Zone” was located. Today, the former power station has become one of the region’s most distinctive and modern event venues.
We’ll end the tour at Tallinn Linnahall, where Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller “Tenet” was filmed, as was, for example, “The Last Sentinel” by Estonian director Tanel Toom. The future and fate of Linnahall, a legendary landmark, remain uncertain. Some would like to demolish it, but the vast majority of people who have learned about Linnahall’s heritage recognise the uniqueness and value of the place and believe it should be preserved for future generations.
The tour is on foot and lasts 120 minutes (2 hours). The route is approximately 3 km long. Tours are available in Estonian, Russian and English.
Tours organised by the Estonian Centre of Architecture are led by Estonia’s best professional guides, who share an interest in architecture and its history.
