Tallinna Rahvaülikool and Tallinna Linnaarhiiv present: Lauri Õunapuu’s lecture on the history of the Estonian bagpipe in Tallinn

Friday, 6 November at 17:30
Tallinna Linnaarhiiv Hall (Tolli tn 6, Tallinn Old Town)

Lauri Õunapuu is a bagpipe player and folk musician with the band Metsatöll, and is also known as a researcher and singer of folk songs. His eloquence has made him a sought-after lecturer in the field of traditional music, both in Estonia and abroad. The Estonian public also knows Lauri’s voice from the Vikerraadio segment “Päritud laul” and the Estonian Traditional Music Centre’s podcast about runo songs, “Regilaulu podcast”.

As Lauri is currently compiling a book on the history of the Estonian bagpipe together with the Estonian Bagpipe Working Group of the Estonian Folk Culture Association, the lecture will explore well-known and lesser-known episodes in the instrument’s history. What are actually the earliest records of our bagpipe? Was there also a distinct Livonian bagpipe? Who is the earliest known Estonian bagpipe player? How did foreign travellers passing through view the Estonian instrumental tradition? Does Estonia have its own bagpipe at all? We will hear and see these things, and much more, for ourselves.

The event is supported by: Eesti Kultuurkapital, Tallinna Rahvaülikool, Tallinna Linnaarhiiv.
