In many cultures, late autumn is a time when the dead visit the world of the living. In Estonian tradition, this is the time of souls, when the spirits of ancestors return to their homes. In the English-speaking world, it is Halloween, the eve of All Saints’ Day, which has woven pre-Christian Celtic customs into itself. In keeping with the season, Narva Museum invites you to a discussion about the dead on 31 October at 15:00—but this time, about their material remains. We will talk about why archaeologists, anthropologists and other “-ologists” study bones, and why some institutions store human remains. We will discuss the ethics of this kind of research and preservation. In the practical part, we will look at some “frightening” objects from the Narva Museum collection and use them to try to learn something about Narva’s former residents.
