Far away in the middle of Ireland, somewhere around Mullingari, live Rosemary and Anthony—two introverted loners approaching middle age. Their family farms, old cattle farms, are so close together that you can hear a kettle whistling in one kitchen from the shed of the other. And yet it is these farms, cattle pens and family feuds that have kept the two neighbours apart since childhood. At first glance, it may seem that Rosemary thinks little of Anthony, though in truth she has spent years waiting for the shy man to awaken from his peculiar stupor and notice more than the small patch of pasture at home. When Anthony’s elderly father one day gives him to understand that he plans to leave the family farm to a distant relative rather than his eccentric son, Rosemary takes action, and Anthony, too, gradually discovers that the key to his happiness may lie in the hands of the tenacious and stubborn Rosemary.
