Ink painting originated in China and became popular in Japan, where it is known as sumi-e, as well as in other East Asian countries. Chinese ink painting (中国水墨画) is a meditative practice of brushwork and mind. Its subject is not merely the depiction of the outer world, but rather the mind and heart captured in a single moment. It offers the painter endless possibilities for self-expression: each brushstroke is exactly as it is in that moment.
In this workshop, we will paint goldfish using a traditional freehand technique. All materials are included in the price. During the break, we will enjoy authentic tea and Asian-style snacks.
In this Chinese ink painting workshop, we will learn a range of skills and concepts, from technical handling to a deeper appreciation of symbolism. Goldfish are considered an important feng shui element in China and Japan, attracting good luck and positive energy. By painting them, we will learn the basics of Chinese ink painting: brush control, linework and the use of color in a freehand technique.
1. Brush exercises – hand and mind
Balanced posture and the correct way to hold a brush.
2. Ink tones and use of color
Ink gradation: light, mid-tone and dark.
3. Capturing the shape of a goldfish – harmony of lines and color washes
Lively lines – controlled yet free movement.
4. Composition – creating balance and harmony
Fish, water, a blooming lotus leaf and empty space as room to breathe.
5. The meditative process – painting with a calm mind
“ A flowing brush, like a fish in water” – allowing the motif to “appear” without controlling it.
The goldfish is an important symbol
The goldfish (金魚 – jīnyú in Chinese) carries rich positive symbolism in Chinese culture. It represents wealth and abundance, good luck and prosperity, fertility and family happiness; in a Buddhist context, a pair of goldfish symbolizes freedom and enlightenment.
Who is it for?
The workshop is suitable for all art enthusiasts, from beginners to those already familiar with Chinese or Japanese brush-and-mind practices. You are warmly welcome!
