On the last weekend of October, Riga takes over Fotografiska Tallinn. For three days, Riga Takes Over brings together Latvian contemporary photography, Riga’s food scene, indie music and nightlife—from Thursday to Saturday, from the exhibition halls to the rooftop floor.

Filips Smits is one of the weekend’s central figures—a force making waves in Latvia’s art scene. His work is featured in this year’s Fotografiska Emerging Artists exhibition, which closes in the final week of October. On the exhibition’s last Friday, Filips will be there to discuss his photographs, ideas and creative world with the audience.

Smits’s photographs are at once strange and captivating, playful and slightly askew—the kind that make you want to stop and ask: what exactly is going on here? At Fotografiska, he is featured in the exhibition “Emerging Artists 2026: The Baltics and Finland” with the series “Let Us Become Sun-Kissed,” a surreal meditation on self-love, time and our connection to the surrounding environment.
