Decades before Breaking Bad, Narcos or Mayans M.C., BRUJERIA brought the world of cartels, drug trafficking, violence and ritual murders into deathgrind. Founded in Mexico in 1989 and shrouded in mystery from the outset, the band blended death metal, grindcore and the Mexican corrido tradition—a form of storytelling about history, everyday life and people living on the other side of the law. Their early albums Matando Güeros (1993), Raza Odiada (1995) and Brujerizmo (2000) became extreme metal classics, while the band’s concealed identities, bandanas, serapes and balaclavas made BRUJERIA one of metal’s most enigmatic collectives.

CRIMINAL (CL)

Founded in Santiago, Chile, in 1991, CRIMINAL is one of Latin America’s best-known metal bands. Emerging from the ashes of the cult band Pentagram, the group helped shape the region’s extreme metal scene and played its first live show as the opening act for Kreator (at a time when Kreator became the first international metal band to perform in Chile). The band’s first albums, Victimized (1994) and Dead Soul (1997), became important underground releases, followed by Cancer, No Gods No Masters, Sicario and White Hell. Released in 2021, Sacrificio added a new chapter to their discography and came out on Metal Blade Records.

Over the decades, CRIMINAL have toured South and North America and Europe, sharing the stage with bands such as Lamb of God, Brujeria and Six Feet Under, and appearing at festivals including Wacken Open Air, Bloodstock and Summer Breeze. One of the biggest moments of their career took place in Santiago, where they performed before 55,000 people as special guests of Metallica.
