ARVO PÄRT. SACRED MINIMALISM

28 November / 18:00 / Tartu Jaani Church
21 November / 18:00 / Tallinn Jaani Church

Arvo Pärt’s chamber music and gong soundscapes

Join us to listen to Arvo Pärt’s music performed on piano and violin. Gong soundscapes are woven between the composer’s works, giving listeners time to let the music resonate and prepare for the next piece.

Silence, clarity of sound and focused listening hold a special place in Arvo Pärt’s music. His distinctive musical language, tintinnabuli, takes its name from the Latin word tintinnabulum, meaning a small bell. At this concert, the sounds of piano and violin meet the rich timbres of the gongs. The gongs are heard between the works as independent musical interludes. They create a calm atmosphere in which to take a break from the pace of everyday life and immerse yourself in the music.

ARVO PÄRT WORKS ON THE PROGRAMME:

PERFORMERS

Leena Laas – violin
Leena Laas is a violinist and violin teacher who performs as a soloist and ensemble musician. She has been a member of the Estonian Association of Performers since 1999 and has performed in Estonia and elsewhere in Europe. Estonian and Baroque music have an important place in her repertoire. Her collaboration with pianist Nata-Ly Sakkos resulted in the CD “Poème d’amour”.

Auli Teppo – piano
Auli Teppo is a pianist who became known through the first season of the television competition “Klassikatähed”. She has performed as a soloist with several orchestras and is active as a chamber musician. Arvo Pärt’s music holds an important place in her repertoire. In the joint project “Ikoonid/Pärt” by Tallinna Filharmoonia and Tallinna Tantsuteater, she performed Arvo Pärt’s piano music.

Lilia Märtmaa and Deniss Vinogradov – gongs
Lilia Märtmaa and Deniss Vinogradov are musicians, multi-instrumentalists and founders of the HelideLab centre. At this concert, they will create musical interludes on gongs, focusing on timbre, dynamics and silence.

THE SOUND OF GONGS
A gong is a percussion instrument whose sound is produced by the vibration of the instrument itself. Its sound can be delicate and barely audible, or expansive and powerful. Different playing techniques make it possible to create a variety of timbres and slowly changing soundscapes. In this programme, the gong interludes offer an opportunity to listen to sound emerging, changing and fading, and to notice the silence between sounds.
