There are people who never cross the line. This production is not about them. Sometimes a person is a rational being. This production is about the others. “Across the Border” is a physical theatre production about two characters who find themselves in an empty space and soon discover that the most complicated boundaries do not run across the floor, but between people. No words are used. Imagination is. In the language of physical theatre, through humour and play, the production explores all kinds of boundaries: those we set for ourselves and those imposed on us, the absence, crossing or breaking of boundaries, as well as physical and mental boundaries. In Estonian, the word “piir” has several meanings. A “piir” can be a physical, marked borderline (in English, “border”), an abstract boundary or restriction (in English, “boundary”), or the limit of a person’s abilities (in English, “limit”). Boundaries and restrictions limit, protect and oppress us every day. Whether we know how to recognise and perceive them is another matter. The production uses no stage scenery; all the worlds and scenes, designs and forms created on stage are made using just a couple of rolls of painter’s tape. This is a playful element offering endless possibilities, used to awaken the audience’s imagination and create meanings and connections. Territories, laws, conflicts, alliances and revolutions emerge from strips of tape. This is a production that leaves room for thought. The production is wordless and understandable to everyone, regardless of age, nationality, gender, religion, worldview, sexual orientation or political affiliation, and is digestible for both vegans and carnivores.
